Sports drinks are popular because they help replenish electrolytes we lose through sweat, specifically during periods of intense exercise. Though we can also lose electrolytes through vomiting, diarrhea and under high heat temperatures.
Electrolytes are important in regulating nerve and muscle function, hydrating the body, balancing blood acidity and managing blood pressure. When you have an imbalance with your electrolytes you’re more likely to feel weak, fatigued, dizzy and experience muscle cramping. So it’s important to replenish them.
The problem with commercial sports drinks like gatorade are that they’re typically filled with junk. You can find ingredients like: artificial flavours, artificial sweeteners, artificial colours and high fructose corn syrup. All of which can pose harm on the body and promote inflammation, especially when consumed on a regular basis.
Luckily it’s easy and simple to make your own sports drink at home!
These are the key ingredients:
Coconut water: Coconut water is packed with potassium, trace amounts of calcium and magnesium.
Fruits: Fruit helps add natural flavour to your sports drink and offer a quick source of energy through its sugar content. It also helps supply the body with potassium and vitamin c. Though Vitamin C is not necessarily an electrolyte, it can help speed recovery.
Salt: Most natural sources of electrolytes like the above stated are only lacking one thing: Sodium. Sodium helps the body absorb water and have it reach your cells. Unrefined salt like Himilyan or Celtic Sea Salt are great ways to add sodium into your drink along with other minerals like potassium, magnesium and calcium.
- 1 cup cocont water
- 2 cups orange juice 4 oranges
- 1 cup lemon juice 2 large lemons
- 1/4 tsp sea salt
- Squeeze your lemons and oranges
- Mix all your ingredients together
